About this book

Language: French

This extensively illustrated book is based on the 1925 history course of Gustave Huffel (professor at the prestigious École des Eaux et Forêts in Nancy).

Commented on and completed to this day, it relates 2000 years of the history of the forests of France: evolution of species, areas, populations, modes of ownership, forest law, silvicultural techniques and uses of forests and wood. As the backdrop to the history of France, the forest has experienced very diverse policies, alternating in particular between the long and the short term.

Jean-Marie Ballu and Georges-André Morin provide a real analysis of Huffel’s course, previously unpublished, which they punctuate with comments to better understand the economic and political issues. They complete this course with an examination of the period from 1827 – when the Forest Code was promulgated – to 2012.
