This multiauthor book is a compilation of fourteen papers that result from activities within the scientific programme "Response of the Earth System to Impact Processes" (IMPACT) of the European Science Foundation. The program deals with all aspects of meteorite impact research and operates through workshops, exchange programs and short courses. Most of the papers are initiated from the 4th IMPACT workshop "Meteorite Impacts in Precambrian Shields" that took place in Lappajarvi, Finland, in 2000. The volume begins with a detailed view of thirty confirmed meteorite impact structures found in the Fennoscandian Shield and its nearest surroundings. The following papers describe impact structures in different areas.
From the contents: The Impact Cratering Record of Fennoscandia.- Re-examining Structural Data from Impact Craters on the Canadian Shield in the Light of Theoretical Models.- Popigai Crater.- Geophysics and Petorphysics of the Popigai Impact Structure, Siberia.- U-Pb Analyses of Zircons from the Popigai Impact Structure, Russia.- Impact-Generated Hydrothermal Systems: Data from Popigai, Kara and Puchez-Katunki Impact Structures.- Geology and Petrography of the Zapadnaya Impact Crater.- Bosumtwi Impact Crater.- Geochemistry of Soils from the Bosumtwi Impact Structure and Relationship to Radiometric Airborne Geophysical Data.- Tektite Origin in Oblique Impacts.- Geology and Magnetic Signatures.- Natural Ressources of the Kardla Impact Structure.- Seismic Correlation of the Mjolnir Marine Impact Crater to Shallow Boreholes.- Numerical Modelling of Impacts into Shallow Sea.
