About this book

Language: Italian with scientific nomenclature

This book accompanies the reader in the discovery of benthic macroalgae which, with their colours and their different morphologies, create a unique panorama in the natural environments in which they live. Indeed, the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea is characterized by a high biodiversity estimated at around 1200 species for green, brown and red macroalgae with floristic elements of various origins integrated into the current composite benthic algal flora. Even if their biological evolution required a very long time, it then endowed these plants, characterized by relatively simple morphological expressions, with sophisticated mechanisms that ensured their diffusion in all the seas and oceans of our planet.

In this book, in addition to the images kindly supplied to the author by colleagues and fellow divers, the reader will also find entire chapters dedicated to the strategies used by these organisms to optimize their relationship with the environment and in particular those employed in the reproductive processes which include phototactic movements by the gametes, perception of stimuli (photoperiod and temperature), and the use of sex hormones (in the case of brown algae).
