About this book

Language: Portuguese

The diversity of mammals in Brazil runs into impressive numbers and is certainly one of the largest in the world. Since publication of the first edition of this guide, four years prior to this second edition, 42 new species distributed in five orders have been described. Taking into account changes in taxonomy, the effective number of species covered increases by 30 species from 658 to 688 species in this edition, distributed in 46 families and 12 orders. Of these species, 69 are threatened with extinction, most of which belong to the orders Primates, Rodentia and Carnivora, with 26, 12 and 10 species respectively. Considering the intimate relation that wild mammals have with Brazilian ecosystems, these numbers are certainly related to the great reduction, fragmentation and other anthropic impacts these natural areas are experiencing. The intention of this book is to present the species of mammals of Brazil, and to aid studies and conservation measures that aim at diminishing the risks to which these animals are being exposed
