About this book

Language: Spanish

This book deals with the evolutionary history of the metatherians, specifically the origin and evolution of the marsupials and Sparassodonta and their evolution and radiation in South America and all the fossil records made in Chile to date. The Sparassodonta are an extinct order of carnivorous metatherian mammals native to South America. They were once considered to be true marsupials, but are now considered a sister taxon. The author describes the biogeographical and evolutionary history of the species present in Chile today, as well as the biogeographic history of the continents and the emergence of these native groups in South America. Once isolated from other continental masses, it gave rise to spectacular zoological groups, exclusive to this continent. When the Isthmus of Panama was formed, new species entered, thus ending almost 60 million years of isolation. That saw the emergence of the most spectacular native South American mammals, of which almost 80% became extinct. The small marsupials that we find today in Chile are representatives of a fauna that had no equal in another part of the world.
