Norge med Svalbard har Europas mest spennende og artsrike torvmoseflora, og denne boken er den første i sitt slag som beskriver dette artsmangfoldet. Samtidig omtaler forfatteren ulike sider og egenskaper ved torvmosene som plantegruppe og som biologisk og økologisk viktige byggesteiner i norsk natur. Blant annet lagrer torvmoseslekten mer karbon enn noen annen plantegruppe i verden, og står derfor sentralt i diskusjonen om drivhuseffekten.

I denne boken omtales femtifem forskjellige arter og underarter av torvmoser i Norge, med fargebilder og kart som viser deres utbredelse. Torvmosenes biologi, formering , spredning og økologi er også gitt stor plass. Torvmoser er tilholdssted for et yrende liv av mikroskopiske organismer, og både dette og plantegruppens bruksområder er bredt omtalt.
