Brazil, with three thousand species of orchids, is one of the world's regions where biodiversity in this family is the largest. Three major biomes intersect in the country and the Atlantic forest, though largely destroyed, is probably the richest of the three. It extends all along the Atlantic coast from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the south to that of Bahia, with areas of greater or lesser diversity. Serra do Castelo, in the state of Espirito Santo, is one of this biome diversification homes and, consequently, one of the areas where there are the greatest number of orchid species: approximately 750, or 25% of the total number of known species in Brazil. To present this diversity 4 volumes were necessary in this series. In Volume 1, the last one to be published, the authors treat the other Epidendroideae subfamilies – vanilloideae, Orchidoideae and Spiranthoideae – representing 90 species, distributed in 26 genres.

After a brief reporting on the phylogenetic relationships of these three subfamilies, and the tribes that compose them, genera are discussed in alphabetical order in each of the sub-tribes. For each species, the taxonomy is summarised, the geographical distribution and the specified material examined during the preparation of this volume. A complete morphological description is given, with usually a color photograph of the flower and a botanical line drawing.

To carry out this work the authors have relied on a network of many local orchid enthusiasts, who trekked into the forests of Serra and provided a large amount of the living material. Two major herbaria were also used to study the preserved material. The first author, a research associate at the University of Lyon, travels to Espirito Santo several times a year  and can observe orchids in their natural environment as well as within the collections of his collaborators. The second is a local orchidophile, and oversees a network of local enthusiasts.

The first part of the volume is devoted to the presentation of the Serra do Castelo (geography, geology, explorers and scientists who contributed to the discovery of its orchid flora) and orchids (natural history, phylogeny, and evolution). A set of appendices provides some additional tools: a set of keys to the subfamily genera, bibliography, index of scientific names contained in all 4 volumes and index of illustrations.

Le Brésil, avec trois mille espèces d'orchidées, est l'une des régions du monde où la biodiversité dans cette famille est la plus grande. Trois grands biomes se partagent le pays et la forêt atlantique, bien que largement détruite, est probablement le plus riche des trois. Elle s'étend tout le long de la côte atlantique, depuis l'état de Rio Grande do Sul, au sud, jusqu'à celui de Bahia, avec des zones de plus ou moins forte diversité. La Serra do Castelo, dans l'état d'Espirito Santo, est l'un des foyers de diversification de ce biome et, par conséquent, l'une des zones où l'on compte le plus grand nombre d'espèces d'orchidées : environ 750, soit 25% du nombre total d'espèces connues au Brésil. Pour les présenter toutes, 4 volumes ont été nécessaires. Dans le volume 1, sont traitées les sous-familles autres qu'Epidendroideae – Vanilloideae, Orchidoideae et Spiranthoideae – soit 90 espèces, réparties en 26 genres.

Après un bref rappel des relations phylogénétiques de ces trois sous-familles et des tribus qui les composent, les genres sont abordés par ordre alphabétique dans chacune des sous-tribus. Pour chaque espèce, la taxinomie est rappelée, la répartition géographique précisée et le matériel examiné à l'occasion de l'élaboration du livre indiqué. Une description morphologique complète est donnée, accompagnée le plus souvent d'une photographie en couleur de la fleur et d'une planche botanique.

Pour mener à bien ce travail les auteurs se sont appuyés sur un réseau de nombreux orchidophiles locaux, qui parcourent avec passion les forêts de la Serra et ont fourni une grande quantité de matériel vivant. Deux grands herbiers ont en outre permis d'étudier le matériel conservé. Le premier auteur, chercheur associé à l'Université de Lyon, se rend plusieurs fois par an en Espirito Santo et y observe les orchidées tant dans leur milieu naturel qu'au sein des collections de ses collaborateurs. Le second est un orchidophile local, animateur d'un réseau de passionnés.

La première partie du volume est consacrée à la présentation de la Serra do Castelo (géographie, géologie, explorateurs et scientifiques ayant contribué à la découverte de sa flore d'orchidées) et des orchidées (histoire naturelle et phylogénie, évolution). Un ensemble d'annexes fournit quelques outils supplémentaires : jeu de clés des sous-familles jusqu'aux genres, bibliographie, index des noms scientifiques cités dans l'ensemble des 4 volumes et index des illustrations.
