Reviews plants that contain toxins that affect man and beast. It is unusual for including crops and foods, house and garden plants, rather than just the wild flowers. Divided into habitat sections, it identifies the plants, names their toxins, describes the affects these have and celebrates the ways in which so many of them are exploited in modern medicines.
Some 160 genera and species are included. They are all around us in our everyday lives and this is emphasised through the range of illustrations included. The text is written in everyday English for the general reader but at the same time gives the botanical names of the plants so as to avoid confusion and the pharmacological names of the toxins to aid further enquiry. The text includes, wherever possible, the latest information available. It certainly presents a world of surprises and wonder, in both the living plants and in modern medicine.
