The book describes and figures 1 982 Recent and 723 fossil species of molluscs from Indonesia and the surrounding seas, in the part on recent shells covering also approximately 330 land snails and 35 freshwater shells.

That new book replaces the former two volumes of Indonesian Shells Volume 1 (1988) and Volume 2 (1992) of the same author in a perfect way, showing nearly 60 percent of recent shells more than those both together in a much better quality, but exhibiting additionally many of the fossils from the Triassic period to the Pleistocene.
