Sewerage and wastewater treatment will become, argue the editors of this text, ever more dependent in the future on online information from sensors. With such reliable continuous online information, the potential for improved performance is vast. For this to happen, however, our understanding for the process dynamics must be improved, the hardware and software used in the sensors and subsequent processing must be both reliable and able to handle quantities of data orders of magnitude greater than previously experienced.
