The Marine Nature Conservation Review of Great Britain (the MNCR) commenced in 1987 with the main objectives of extending our knowledge of benthic marine habitats, communities and species in Great Britain and identifying sites and species of nature conservation importance. The development of a classification of marine benthic biotopes is being undertaken by the MNCR and is of central importance in site comparison and to aid management.
