About this book

Language: Portuguese

The book Serpentes da Caatinga: Guia Ilustrado presents a total of 113 species of snakes from the Caatinga, northeastern Brazil on 152 illustrated pages. Ontogenetic variations and polymorphisms in the colouring pattern of certain species are illustrated. For each snake information is given on morphology (size, mass and dentition), habitat use (hours of activity and substrate), eating habits (main items), reproductive mode (oviparous or viviparous), defensive tactics and whether it poses a risk of serious poisoning to humans. Species of snakes are grouped by colouration in order, which should facilitate identification when the reader encounters them. Before the section with identification plates, there is an introductory text about the Caatinga and about snakes, which characterizes and summarizes the main aspects of the natural history of these animals. The guide also includes sections about other serpentine vertebrates and other reptiles that can be found in the Caatinga. At the end of the guide, there are taxonomic comments on some of the species. Finally, there is a list of all the snakes recorded for the Caatinga to date, indicating which ones are endemic, complemented by information about the vegetal physiognomy used by each species.
