About this book

Start to Identify Mosses is the latest in Faith Anstey's Start to Identify series. As with its predecessors, such as Start to Identify Grasses, the aim is to introduce people with a minimal smattering of botanical knowledge to the subject of Mosses. It is not a field guide – i.e. a set of pictures and descriptions – but a primer on how to learn the skills of identifying mosses from scratch.

Instead of keys that induce kleidophobia (i.e. a fear of keys), a beginner-friendly flowchart format is used. This leads the reader in easy steps from 'What is a moss?' to simplified ID of 24 of the most commonly-recorded mosses in the British Isles. There are photographs on every page, chosen for their value in imparting detailed information about the mosses in question to support the text.

This book will be of interest and utility to ecologists, botanists wanting to begin bryology, gardeners, and natural history lovers of all ages and stages.
