About this book

Surrey Rare Plant Register: The Rare, Scarce and Declining Plants of Surrey is the first published work on the flora of Surrey (Watsonian vice-county 17) for over 35 years. It provides details on the status and distribution of Britain’s rare, scarce and threatened plants that occur in Surrey and includes species that may be widespread elsewhere but are at risk in the county. It is intended to be of interest to statutory agencies, conservation organisations, major landowners and land managers, consultants, and professional and amateur botanists.

Surrey has a wide variety of soils and habitats supporting a richly diverse flora. 413 taxa have been identified according to strict criteria of national, regional and local rarity and threat. Other notable taxa that have been included are plants of international importance and species listed under Section 41 of 2006 Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act and Schedule 8 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act.

The status of each species is given with an account, distribution map or records table (with site names and grid references). There are 288 pages, 87 colour plates, 107 distribution maps, and appendices listing taxa in conservation categories using both scientific and common names. Introductory sections cover species selection criteria and habitats and conservation in Surrey. Written by they Surrey Botanical Society, this publication forms part of the Surrey Wildlife Trust Atlas Series.
