The first comprehensive natural history of the arid zone which constitutes 70 per cent of Australia's landmass and an ecological frontier. The focus of this book is the Amadeus basin containing the Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and the central ranges including the MacDonnells. The Finke, the main river system, links all the areas studied in the book and is arguably the oldest river in the world.
