About this book
Unlike wolves and bears that weaved their way into our childhood consciousness, the lynx is largely unknown to us. What do these secretive ambush hunters look like? What do they eat? How do they live? And how do they get on with people?
Using examples from across Europe, The Lynx and Us describes how this enigmatic predator is recovering lost ground and, crucially, what that means for the human population in this, the busiest of continents.
As wolves, bears and lynx return to landscapes across the Continent, it seems likely that Britain will be the last corner of Europe without any of its missing large predators. This book concludes therefore, with a question: What would it mean to live once more alongside Europe’s largest cat, the Eurasian lynx?

Return of lynx to the land of the brave

Having worked on large carnivore conservation and management planning here in Finland since 2005, I have a pretty good idea of the complexity of the ecological and societal issues related to the co-existence of us and these fascinating but sometimes also problematic species. This thorough work The Lynx and Us by Dr David Hetherington addresses these various aspects comprehensively, and it lays a firm foundation for making a detailed plan for reintroducing Eurasian lynx into Scotland. The text is clearly written by an expert, but the superb photographs by Laurent Geslin take this piece to yet another level – it is not only science but art as well.

About time to let the cat out of its bag

The Lynx and Us is packed with brilliant photos, but it is far more than just a coffee table book. It also offers the reader an impressive knowledge of all relevant aspects of the ecology of the lynx. In the current Danish rewilding debate we have so far focused on the large herbivores, but also the predators should be considered as a vital part of our future ecological restoration. In that respect, the book's honest review of the interactions with people, domestic animals and deer and the reintroduction experiences from other countries are particularly valuable. Maybe it's about time also in Denmark to let the cat out of its bag and start analyzing the pros and cons of a reintroduction of this magnificent species after approximately 6,000 years of absence? The Lynx and Us makes a great input to this process.

Information & lessons from across Europe!

There aren't any lynx in the UK, yet. To write his book, the author went on a tour of Europe to find out about the biology and ecology of the species, and how people have lived with lynx for centuries ... or for a few decades in places where lynx were recently reintroduced. I'm based in France, and our experience is somewhat limited compared with other countries that were visited, but I'm proud that the photographer is French. The pictures are excellent, and the book is a pleasure to look at in addition to being packed with information.

The book to read on lynx in the modern world

The Lynx and Us is excellent at all levels and recommended to anyone with an interest in the species and how it fits into the modern world. I live in Norway, whereas in so many places, human-human social factors dominate the way wildlife is seen and managed – especially large predators. This book is particularly good on covering those issues – including in Norway – though of course, the animal itself remains at centre stage. Not only is the information all here, the photographs are superb.

Amazing book about the Eurasian lynx

This book gives a great overview of the ecology of the Eurasian lynx and its relationship through the centuries with Europe's human inhabitants. David Hetherington's clear and informative text is beautifully complemented by Geslin's amazing images of lynx, all of which are wild animals photographed in the Swiss Alps and Jura. The text refers to many more landscapes right across Europe, including Bavarian Forest National Park where I work on this species. The final chapter is an interesting case study which asks what effects on people, wildlife and livestock might come from reintroducing the lynx to Scotland, where lynx have not existed for several centuries
