About this book

The Okavango Companion is one of a series of all-in-one field guides to wild places in Botswana. It covers the common and conspicuous mammals (34 species), birds (186 birds), amphibians and reptiles (17 species), and plants (40 species) in the Okavango wetland system. Clear photographs assist with species identification, supplemented by short but informative text.

The Okavango Companion has been written and designed for the inquiring visitor who would like to know a bit more about the fauna and fauna of the Okavango. Setswana, French and German names are included along with the English and scientific names. Sections are colour-coded for ease of use, and the alphabetical quick index at the front enables any species to be quickly found.

Biography

Pete Hancock is a field biologist with a consuming interest in Botswana’s fauna and flora. His work as a professional conservationist has taken him to virtually every corner of the country over the past 25 years. He is a keen photographer and natural history writer. He has a special interest in vulture conservation.

Richard Randall, a professional guide-naturalist, has lived in Botswana since 1986. He organises and guides lodge-based and mobile camping safaris, including specialised birding trips, in the country’s premium wilderness areas. For many years he has been involved in safari guide training. Richard is a member of BirdLife Botswana’s Records Subcommittee.
