The Third Hunt, written by Vladimir Soloukhin (1924-1997), was published in Russian in Moscow in 1968. Here, it is translated for the first time in English by Olive Home. It is still well known today, and often referred to on Russian mushrooming websites.
The fruits of a lifetime of mushroom hunting, Soloukhin draws on his local knowledge of mushrooms from the peasant village where he grew up in this book. His magazine articles on mushrooms brought replies from readers all over the Soviet Union, from which he included a remarkable contribution on how to cultivate white mushrooms, or boletus. Soloukhin writes a naturalist's diatribe against honey fungus, and a closing chapter on how to find, and cook, morels.
