About this book

In the ‘low news’ dull times of summer when the tabloids need to drum up stories to sell papers, possible Great White sightings always result in screaming headlines. What is the truth? Do Great Whites visit our shores? Are Great Whites a threat in British waters?

Richard Peirce, past chairman of both the Shark Trust and the Shark Conservation Society has kept records of claimed Great White shark sightings for 20 years. This book summarises his findings, answers the questions, and is a must read for all those interested in this fascinating enigma.

  • Excellent summary without sensationlism
By David 27 Aug 2016 Written for Paperback
This is an excellent read about one of UK's offshore mysteries, Has a great white ever visited our shore? Richard Peirce looks at all the records and analyses them using all his experience as a foremost shark biologist. He also looks at the great whites biology and ecology and why it would come to British Waters plus the other sharks known to swim in our waters. The accounts given by eye witnesses are interesting and as such all the surrounding media attention some of them receive. I would heartily recommend this to anyone with an interest in sharks in general and great whites in particular.

Biography

Richard Peirce is best known as a shark conservationist. Trying to help ensure a future for this threatened group of animals has been his main focus for over twenty five years. He was chairman of the Shark Conservation Society and the Shark Trust for over ten years, and is the author of Sharks in British Seas, Sharks off Cornwall & Devon, Shark Attack Britain, The Long Swim and The UK Great White Shark Enigma. He presented the BBC Radio 4 series Shark Hunt, has appeared in countless documentaries, and made several films including, with Simon Spear, the award winners Sharks in British Seas and Porbeagles in Peril. His other books include local history books, and The Poacher’s Moon and Giant Steps which focus on rhinos and elephants. Richard and his wife, Jacqui, are confirmed nomads who have lived in Europe, Africa, and Arabia. They spend half the year in South Africa and their love of wildlife takes them onto or into the water or to the bush at every opportunity.
