About this book

The Avalon Marshes in Somerset are a huge success story. In half a century, 1500 hectares of farmland and peatworks have been transformed into a vibrant wetland where birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates flourish. The area lies within sight of Glastonbury Tor and includes RSPB Ham Wall, Shapwick Heath NNR, Shapwick Moor NNR, Catcott, Westhay Moor NNR and other sites which together create a magnificent haven for wildlife. Since 2022, they have all been part of the Somerset Wetlands National Nature Reserve.

This book goes through the year, month by month, describing the life cycles and activities of the creatures which inhabit the marshes. Courtship displays, egg-laying, looking after chicks, territorial disputes, migration, hunting for food, surviving the winter – all are described and illustrated. There is an exuberant collection of photographs, all contributed by local photographers who spend many patient hours watching and waiting for that perfect moment. Hopefully, it will help you decide which month you would like to visit or revisit.
