About this book

Language: German

The emerald dragonflies of the family Corduliidae are strikingly beautiful and elegant fliers surrounded by an almost mystic aura due to their elusive habits and often remote habitats. Of the European species few are common, some rare or endemic, and others endangered.

To date, less information about these furtive insects has been available, although our knowledge has increased enormously in recent years. This monograph comprises a comprehensive synopsis of the author`s own research and the observations published by other workers. Each of the eleven European corduliid species is treated in detail and the book covers all aspects of their biology: systematics, nomenclature and evolution; the life cycle, including the morphology and natural history of all developmental stages; adult life, including maturation, foraging, and reproductive behaviour; neurophysiology; and habitat selection. A chapter on conservation completes the book which can also serve as a general introduction to odonate biology.

Media reviews

The author is well known for the excellence of his research and lucidity of his writings; the present monograph is a sublime work both as to the style and the depth and scope of presentation. The 140 line drawings, all original, enhance the lucidity of the text. In my opinion this is by far the best book on European dragonflies so far published. ... Last but not least: the comprehensive bibliography of ca 1500 titles is in itself an important document. (Prof. Dr. Bastiaan Kiauta in: Odonatological Abstracts in: Odonatologica 38: 88-89, 2009)
