About this book

Language: German

2014 reprint, originally published in 1959.

Bandoliers and belts made of dark-brown, white-striped pieces of fur have been known to the jungle pygmies of the Congo region for a long time. Europeans who saw such strips of fur initially believed they were from a previously unknown zebra. It was not until the turn of the century that entire skins and skulls came into the hands of whites and indicated that they came from a giraffe-like animal, which was given the native name "okapi". Even today, the jungle giraffe is one of the rarest inhabitants of zoos all over the world. It has now been learned how to keep the okapi healthy in captivity, even to get it to reproduce, although only one okapi calf born outside Africa has been raised. The biologist at the Antwerp Zoological Garden, who has had a large number of okapis under daily supervision for years, reports on the history, shape and way of life of this strange animal.
