About this book

Language: French

Volcanoes are lands of paradoxes. Almost a negligible manifestation of terrestrial activity from a thermodynamic point of view, they nonetheless represent one of the most fascinating natural phenomena, which can be in turn majestic, silent, unstable, murderous, suppliers of fertile terrain or disruptive global climate change. Such natural objects can only be identified through a multidisciplinary scientific approach that combines physics, chemistry and field geology.

Traité de Volcanologie Physique proposes an updated synthesis, reframing the geological object "volcano" in its geodynamic context, but also in contemporary issues by providing technical, financial (or economic) and societal quantification elements. In turn, essential volcanological issues are discussed such as magmatic plumbing, the impact of volcanism on the climate, hydrovolcanology, para-volcanic phenomena, the concept of volcanic risk and paroxysmal volcanism – responsible for mass extinctions at the origin of many geological eras – and extraterrestrial volcanism.
