New Caledonia is recognized as one of the richest territories for biodiversity in the world.
In order to preserve the biodiversity for future generations, and for the first time ever, the Societe Caledonienne d'Ornithologie (SCO) have spent the last two years working on the identification, promotion, and management with the population in establishing the important bird areas for conservation.
This work made it possible to carry out an exhaustive inventory of the birds and the identification of 32 sites were judged as priority conservation areas (for the protection of birds and more largely the biodiversity).
These sites are unique and exceptional and thus of world interest.
Their total surface area is approx 6 600 km squared, that is approx 35% of the land emerging in New Caledonia.
This atlas should shows the impact of man on the environment and encourages us to act - to take drastic measures to preserve these unique sites in the world.
