About this book

Language: German

Identifying the larvae of German amphibians is relatively simple in some species but difficult in others difficult, especially if it concerns live animals.

Many identification books leave the reader in the dark about which of the features listed are only seen on conserved specimens, and which can clearly be seen on the living animal and be used for identification. They often offer a few schematic and generalized drawings or individual photos so that the reader does not get a good idea of how varied and beautiful amphibian larvae can appear.

This photographic atlas of amphibian larvae native to Germany takes a different approach. All features described in the literature were compared with extensive photographic material of live animals and tested for their actual suitability in identifying species under these conditions. The resulting identifying features, presented in the individual visual chapters, can be seen in all the pictures in the Atlas. In addition, new features, hitherto not described in the literature, are shown in some species.

For a quick start, all the larval types are presented at the beginning of the book. Based on this selection, the reader can decide for which species he must look more in-depth to identify a larva. To this end, more than 500 photos have been included for all the species, which usually start with the emergence of the animals from the fetal membranes or with the neonate larvae, as in the case of fire salamander, and ends with larvae in metamorphosis. In addition to the different types of middle-aged larvae, all larval types are thus presented in various stages of development and in their great diversity of markings, colors and shapes.

With this wealth of photos this is the first German book showing all German amphibian species shows in their larval stages.

Summary in Geman:

"[...] compared to other parts of the world, the German amphibian fauna can be considered well known with plenty of guides available. Even for tadpoles a dedicated guide exists that is currently in its eleventh edition (Berninghausen 2012), which leaves the question whether this new book really offers anything new. The answer to that is simple: it absolutely does! Compared to conventional guidebooks, the pictorial atlas follows a somewhat different concept. It is not so much a standalone guide but is rather meant to supplement other guides to help identify live larvae in the field, although it should be sufficient in most cases. [...] The focus is instead on providing detailed photographs and it is here that the book excels. Altogether, more than 500 photographs of consistently very high quality depict larvae at various stages throughout their development, usually covering about ten to twelve different stages per species from hatching to the end of metamorphosis. [...] Although the book is written in German, there is little text and for these parts it is easy to understand (or to translate), and anyone with a modest command of the language should have no trouble. All covered species are more or less widespread throughout Europe, so this book should be of use not only to herpetologists working in Germany, but well beyond her borders. Furthermore, anyone with an interest in amphibians and their larvae will appreciate this book and enjoy the beautiful photographs."
