About this book

Language: English

Adak Island, Alaska, is located in the central Aleutian Islands, midway between Siberia and the mainland of Alaska. In 1974, 47 collections for diatom analysis were made at thirteen different localities on the island during the period January 26 through October 25. Except for five taxa reported previously (Judson 1946), these are the only diatoms which have been recorded from Adak Island. Three hundred twenty one taxa are reported (distributed among 39 genera) including one new species (Nitzschia adakensis Hein). All taxa are illustrated with 550 photographs in 53 plates Of the 321 taxa, 87 taxa are new records for Alaska, 293 are new records for the Aleutian Islands, and 318 are new records for Adak Island. Of the diatom species identified, most are characteristic of acidic water of low mineral content.
