About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and Slovenian

In this monograph, the authors have analysed the work of Slovenian botanist Alfonz Paulin, who made a significant contribution to the development of Slovenian botany at the turn of the last century. He wrote the first original textbook on botany and thus helped develop Slovenian terminology. He was a high school professor and lectured on botany at the then newly founded university. While analysing the flora, he found that the knowledge of plants in Slovenia needed to be supplemented and created his largest and most important scientific contribution: the herbarium collection Flora exsiccata Carniolica, which is the cornerstone for the further development of floristics in Slovenia. In addition, for many years he led its oldest botanical institution – the Botanical Garden, which, with his work, raised it to the European level and established numerous connections with other gardens in Europe.
