About this book

Language: Spanish with bilingual introduction in English and Spanish

A preliminary catalogue of phanerogams of Argentina was published at the beginning of this century by Hauman & Vanderveken (1916) and Hauman & Irigoyen (1923). These authors included in it the Gymnosperms and Monocotyledoneae and a portion of the Dicotyledoneae. Those publications were the basis of many treatments, including monographic and floristic revisions, which have expanded the knowledge of vascular plants of the country. The purpose of the present publication is to provide updated basic information, in a checklist format, of the family Poaceae in Argentina. This represents the first step toward the publication of a checklist of all vascular plants of the country.

This treatment includes a checklist of valid genera and species names of Poaceae in Argentina, with 174 genera, 1151 species, 10 subspecies, 174 varieties and 18 forms. One hundred and sixty-three species, and 97 varieties and 11 forms are considered to be endemic. Each taxon was critically evaluated based on the literature information and the authors‘ own data. Herbarium specimens were also studied, particularly those found at BAA and SI. As a consequence of these studies new data are presented in the checklist.

pcTROPICOS, developed by the Missouri Botanical Garden, was the database utilized in this study. Data were processed with an IBM-compatible 386 computer, in which all information about vascular plants of South America present in TROPICOS at the Missouri Botanical Garden until 1991 was downloaded. Since then this database was enriched with additional references of vascular plants. The cardfile at the Darwinion Institute was utilized for literature citations, together with personal cardfiles of the authors. All citations included in pcTROPICOS were later transferred to a word processor and prepared for camera-ready publication.

All the names of genera, species, subspecies, varieties and forms previously cited for Argentina are considered in the catalogue. All entries are organized alphabetically throughout. Taxa that are excluded from or considered to be of dubious occurrence in Argentina, together with taxa of doubtful validity or nomina nuda, were placed at the end of the treatment, before the literature cited. Naturalized adventitious species were included. Cultivated species or hybrids were excluded.
