This report, a Gap analysis of protected area coverage in the ASEAN countries, encompasses the protected area networks of ten ASEAN Member Countries. Determining and addressing gaps in the protected area systems of the ASEAN is particularly important in the light of the immense biodiversity found in the region and the pressures that threaten its existence.
It is hoped that this preliminary gap analysis will initiate changes in the systems, and allow protected areas in the region to evolve into fully functioning and effective ecological sanctuaries. Revisions on current systems based on regular gap analyses and constant monitoring are sure to benefit species, nature and people, and will certainly play a significant role in actions to reduce biodiversity loss by 2010.
