Fof fifty years, the author has, in various guises, studied insect physiology with an aim of applying this knowledge to the control of the insect-borne diseases of the tropics. Against this background of economic entomology and his work with applied biologists he has reflected upon the relationship between pure science and its application for the economy of mankind. The purpose of this book is to communicate some of the opinions he has formed and, more importantly, to give an indication of what applied entomology is all about, and indicate some of the excitements and rewards of scientific research.
