About this book

Language: German

Mosquitoes are not among the most popular animals. If one speaks of them, everyone usually thinks of the mosquitoes and their preference for our blood. Fortunately, not all of the mosquitoes, in particular one group that's very common in Europe, the Chironomidae, can not even scratch the delicate skin of an infant with their regressed mouthpieces, and blood is absolutely not on their diet. On the other hand, they sometimes show another unpleasant, but far more harmless property: in good mosquito years, they form huge swarms that are unpopular. But precisely because of their mass occurrence these insects play a very important role in the cycles of nature and are indispenable to regular water cycles. Their aquatic larvae and pupae are indispensable food for almost all of our freshwater fish, especially during their youth. Without mosquito larvae fish stocks in our lakes and brooks would suffer, and without mosquitoes some birds would have to forgo their fat meals. It is therefore worthwhile to shows these animals a little interest and benevolence, because with them we have one of the most species-rich insect families before us, which has a wealth of interesting biological peculiarities.
