About this book

Language: German

Cute and playful, but not uncontroversial: this is a large, richly illustrated portrait of the otter and the amazing comeback of an almost extinct animal, its history, biology and ecology.

The otter has a turbulent century behind him. Initially, it was rigorously persecuted. When it was extinct in many places, the otter became a symbol of endangered nature. But as soon as they receovered, they made themselves unpopular again in some circles as a fish predator. The species does not seem to leave anybody indifferent. But what do we actually know about the otter? With its primarily nocturnal and secretive life it largely avoids observation.

This book introduces the biology and ecology of the otter. It describes its lifestyle, traces the history of its extermination and return, and discusses the challenges of living with an adaptable aquatic mammal in our water landscape.
