About this book

This monograph provides a comprehensive revision of this beetle genus that now includes 56 species and four subspecies. Occurring in the Western hemisphere, these beetles are often called flower and fruit beetles, and frequently have distinctive patterns and coloration. The monograph includes an identification key, descriptions, diagnoses, distributions, life history information when known, and color illustrations of all the species. Images of some habitats are provided.

The following new species are described: Gymnetis amazona from the Amazon region of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru; Gymnetis aurantivittae from the Amazonian region of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and the Guianas; Gymnetis drogoni from Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay; Gymnetis merops from Peru; Gymnetis puertoricensis from Puerto Rico; Gymnetis rhaegali from French Guiana; Gymnetis thula from Texas, Louisiana, and Florida in the USA and the immediate border area in Mexico; and Gymnetis viserioni from Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador. Neotypes and lectotypes are designated for several species, and numerous new synonyms are established. A revised status is created for some species and several unpublished scientific names are recognized.
