About this book

Language: German

Germany is very varied in its geological structure, as this textbook conveys in clear four-color graphics and, also for non-geologists, understandable text. In the north, the North German Plain spreads, which is covered by young loose sediments. This is followed by the low mountain ranges, in which the oldest rocks of Germany are to be found, and in the south follow the Alps, a chain of geologically young high-altitude mountains, with their foreland sink, the alpine molasse (i.e. deposits of sandstones, shales and conglomerates that form in front of rising mountain chains).

- How did these different mountains and landscape forms come about?
- Which rocks form the geological underground of Germany?
- What is the reason that earthquakes occur only in certain regions of Germany?
- Where can you find young volcanoes and why did they erupt?
- How are all these phenomena involved in the plate tectonic events of Central Europe?
- How was the current land surface finally shaped?

Martin Meschede addresses all these questions in this book and traces the development of Germany from its beginnings on various continents to today's juxtaposition of the different structural units.
