About this book

Language: German

As an exotic veterinarian, Hermann Kempf is known to a wider circle of colleagues and animal lovers. Birds play a major role in his everyday practice. This book introduces the biology of budgies in clear and straightforward language. It is therefore not surprising that the author strongly advises against keeping isolated and lonely Hansis and Bubis for a flock of birds like the budgie, which has been in human care for around a hundred years. Behavioural disorders and even automutilation (e.g. biting one's legs or plucking out one's own feathers) are no surprise with this type of husbandry. The fact that nutrition for birds has a lot to do with activity plays a role in this guide, as does the professional handling during the examination of the bird in order to check its health. Learning from a veterinarian can, above all, mean that the layperson can better assess when an animal's condition requires a consultation with an avian veterinarian: in other words, correctly interpreting early signs of inappropriate behaviour and seeking professional help.
