About this book

The present study was undertaken with an aim to clear the backlog collections of unidentified Nemacheilines present in the holdings of North Eastern Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of lndia (NERC/ZSI), Shillong. 400 specimens of Nemacheiline loaches were examined and identified as 19 species under 6 genera. In North east lndia, Nemacheilidae is represented by 48 species under 6 genera: Aborichthys (5 spp.), Acanthocobitis (3 spp.), Nemacheilus (1 sp.), Neonoemacheilus (4 spp.), Physoschistura (5 spp.) and Schistura (30 spp). Of the 48 species, 25 species are endemic to North East lndia and 8 species are endemic to India. As per the IUCN status, 1 species is Critically Endangered, 5 species are Endangered, 4 species are Near Threatened and 9 species are Vulnerable. Of the total species reported from North East India, 31 species are present in the holdings of NERC/ZSI, Shillong.
