This book was written to fill in the dearth of accessible literature for the general audience on cranes in the Indian state of Gujarat. This region is home to one resident species (the Indian Sarus Crane) and two migratory species of cranes (the Eurasian Crane and the Demoiselle Crane). These globally vulnerable species occur both in wildlife sanctuaries and unprotected areas such as rice paddies, wetlands, irrigation reservoirs, and village ponds. Given that the migratory species depend on agricultural areas for their food, species protection is more than just a matter of law enforcement but also requires sensitization of rural and suburban people to the ecological and cultural importance of these birds. This illustrated book provides accessible text for a general audience to raise awareness of the significance of these birds.
