The Illustrierte Flora von Mitteleuropa that was begun by Dr Gustav Hegi in 1906, has established itself as the definitive reference work and has become a household name in the professional world. Die Vielseitigkeit der in ihr behandelten Sachgebiete, die sehr genaue und trotzdem künstlerische Ausführung der Abbildungen, die Vollständigkeit der Artbeschreibungen und Bestimmungsschlüssel sowie die zum Teil ganz neuen systematischen Bearbeitungen trugen wesentlich zu diesem Erfolg bei.
