About this book

Language: English

The present work is a continuation and a complement of the study on the Ixodid Ticks of Central Africa (Elbl and Anastos, 1966) and deals with the nymphal and larval forms of the tick species occrring in Zaïre, Rwanda, and Burundi. The larvae and nymphs of several species from neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania, and Kenya are included for the sake of completeness and comparison.

The description of larvae and nymphs are based whenever possible on laboratory bred and positively identified materials compared with wild-caught specimens. When reared materials were not available the descriptions are based on wild-caught specimens but only if these could be positively associated with adults occurring on the same host at the same time or in the same ecological and geographical zone. Species for which these types of material were not available are listed but not described.

Biological and ecological data based on field observations and/or experimental work as well as literature data are included whenever available.
