About this book

Language: German

Western Germany is rich in diverse and high-quality natural stone: light to dark red, violet red, yellow, gray green to almost white sand stones, ocher-colored calcareous sandstone, fossil rich and marble-like textured limestone in gray to beige or reddish colors, Travertine, freshwater limestones and Kalktuffe predominantly in light brownish to much more yellowish gray shades, gray and red granites, gneisses and porphyries of the crystalline basement. They are found in seas and lakes, beaches and rivers, to geysers and highly mineralized springs in volcanic events, caused by magmatic melts and the metamorphosis from other rocks and represent approximately 500 million years long and varied history of the earth. The use of these various rocks ranges from simple masonry or paving stone, on facades and floor panels, technical components, monuments and ornamental elements up to masterpieces of stone sculpture as Gothic tracery, pinnacles and sculptures.

The manual describes the rocks of Baden-Württemberg and their properties, their distribution and important deposits, deals with techniques of extraction and processing, and performs numerous examples of their past and present use on. Also deposits of the neighboring countries, whose rocks have long been used in Baden-Württemberg, be explained on the basis of typical examples. Important for the maintenance of historical buildings deposits is given special attention.
