About this product
A pocket loupe or hand lens is an essential part of the naturalist's field kit. Whether your interest is in plants or insects, rocks or small mammals, a magnifying lens will allow you to observe the finer details which will improve both your identification skills and your overall appreciation for the intricacies of the natural world.
This Opticron Hand Lens contains a high quality 23mm doublet lens, made of glass and provides excellent distortion-free magnification. The 10x magnification is recommended for general observations and this magnifier is the one most commonly recommended for all types of fieldwork.
When not in use, the PMMA lens pivots inside the brushed alloy metal casing so that it is protected from scratches and knocks. This also makes it very compact and it will easily fit into a pocket or bag. This hand lens also has a useful metal loop for attaching a neck cord.
To use a hand lens, hold it close to your eye then bring the specimen up to the lens until the point where it is in focus.
For more information about choosing and using a hand lens, check out the NHBS Guide to Hand Lenses.

Good lens but screws gone missing!

I got one of these last year as I'm interested in botany. It's a good one to get if you're just starting out, and I was pleased with it. But now, less than 12 months later, the little screw has fallen out and gone missing! Can it be replaced? Why do they have such a component that can work itself loose in this product? What can I say apart from that if you get one, then you'll have to keep an eye on the screw and make sure it's screwed in. Why can't they make it so that it stays in?... The whole thing has NOT FALLEN APART but could it if I keep using it? I shall have to be extra careful! Feeling a bit disappointed with it. Perhaps other makes of hand lens are better made? I believed the Opticron lens to be 'mid-range'.

My screw also went missing!

Also, less than 12 months after buying this, the screw worked loose. I had tightened it up twice - but on the third time it got loose, it has gone and lost. I will be emailing to see what can be done, as in my opinion, this is not a reasonable length of time for the product.

Screws fell out on ours too

I bought multiple lenses for use by students, and even though the usage has been light and careful, the screws have gradually worked their way out on all of them and been lost. This is despite my having tightened them several times with an eyeglass screwdriver when it become apparent the screws were loosening. I am going to write to Opticron to see whether they will send replacement screws, but this is something that NHBS should take up with Opticron directly, since this is clearly not good enough. One pays a premium for the quality of a branded item, and expects better. The cheap generic hand lenses sold on Amazon have proved to be more durable, staying intact even given the same amount of usage.

I read some reviews about the screw going missing. In conclusion, looks like a good screw is required!
