About this book

Language: Contributions in English and French

This volume, dedicated to Desmond Clark, presents 22 papers on current research into the settlement dynamics of the Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age. Many of these papers were presented at the third meeting of Commission 27 of the UISPP in Liège, Belgium in September, 2001. The research presented here draws on diverse sources of data about subsistence, technology, taphonomy, climatology, paleogeography, geoarchaeology and biological anthropology to build and test models for Middle Paleolithic and MSA settlement systems. Diverse points of view highlight both unifying and contrasting elements in settlement dynamics during this period in which anatomically modern people emerged and important cultural advances were made across the Old World.
