With short and user-friendly keys, hundreds of line illustrations, colour plates and a comprehensive glossary, The Field Key to Winter Twigs is a powerful identification tool, invaluable to all botanists, ecologists, gardeners, foresters, dendrologists, horticulturalists, naturalists and ramblers.

Tracking rare carnivores in winter with eDNA
A new project has shown that animal footprints created in the snow by rare carnivores such as the Canada lynx, contain enough DNA for species identification. This new approach outperforms traditional lab techniques and could revolutionize winter surveys of rare species by greatly reducing misidentifications and missed detections.

New checklist for North American fungi
A new checklist for North American fungi has been published in the journal Mycologia. Over 44,000 species of fungi are featured on the list, however scientists estimate this accounts for only one third of all North American fungi thought to exist.

Identifying animals with computers
A deep neural network has been trained to identify a range of 27 species from camera-trap images at a rate of 2,000 images per minute. This system is  the most accurate machine learning technology for species identification to date, with an accuracy rate of 97.5%.
