Q&A with Katrina van Grouw

Unnatural Selection is a stunningly illustrated book about selective breeding. Its unique fusion of art, science and history explores how individual traits are passed from one generation to the next and how this manifests itself in domesticated species.

We recently caught up with author-illustrator Katrina van Grouw, to talk about her background, the work that goes into making a book and her plans for the future. Read the complete interview on the NHBS blog.

Also by Katrina van Grouw:
The Unfeathered Bird is a richly illustrated book on bird anatomy offering refreshingly original insights into what goes on beneath the feathered surface. A must for anyone who appreciates birds or bird art.

It's fungal foray season!
With the arrival of autumn and UK Fungus Day just around the corner (6th October), now is a great time to get outside to look for fungi and to brush up on your mushroom identification. There's very little you need for a succesful fungal foray, although a penknife and hand lens may come in handy. A good quality ID guide is invaluable though, and if you're planning to forage for your dinner, it's worth consulting an expert, as lots of poisonous species can be easily mistaken for similar, edible ones.

Looking for a good fungi guide? Take a look at our recent email which includes a list of our favourites, or browse our entire range of fungi books on the website.

Bones from massive elephant birds help scientists to study the history of Madagascar
Analysis of human-made cut marks and depressions in ancient bones from extinct Madagascan elephant birds has led researchers to re-date the arrival of humans in Madagascar by more than 6,000 years. This new research now places humans on the island as far back as 10,500 years ago.

Assessing the usefulness of social media for ecological data collection
Researchers from the University of Gloucester have been looking at the potential for ‘Twitter mining’ to be used to study UK ecological events such as winged ant emergence, house spider sightings and starling murmurations. Their results were published this month in Methods in Ecology and Evolution.
