NHBS guide to newt survey
Great Crested Newts are among the most strictly protected amphibians in Europe, requiring licensed ecological surveys if a development may affect them. We have compiled a list of the most common newt survey methods and the equipment needed for each, so that you can ensure you have everything you need as the survey season approaches.

Popular titles on Climate Change
In our latest blog post, we present a selection of thought-provoking titles on this important topic; from handbooks for how we should proceed into the future, to how climate change has and may impact biodiversity on a more local scale in Climate Change and British Wildlife.

NHBS Brexit Preparations

A message to our many European customers and suppliers: we value your business, your books and equipment products and our relationships with you as highly as we have ever done. NHBS has been trading with the continental mainland right from the beginning of the company in 1985; European cooperation on natural history, ecology and conservation is one of the great post-War achievements, which we are proud to be a part of...

Re-establishing Oyster Beds
Researchers have developed a mapping tool that identifies sites for re-establishing oyster reefs that maximize their ecological benefits – such as water filtration. This Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based tool could inform restoration of other vital, sensitive coastal habitats.

Land biodiversity
Biodiversity on land has been similar for at least 60 million years according to new research. The number of species within ecological communities on land has increased only sporadically through geological time, with rapid increases in diversity being followed by plateaus lasting tens of millions of years.

Hygienic Honeybees
Researchers have found that honeybees exhibit hygienic behaviour that has a strong genetic component. By selecting for these ‘clean genes’ we may be able to limit the spread of honeybee diseases and improve colony survival.
