An interview with Kate Bradbury
If you want to attract more bees, birds, frogs and hedgehogs into your garden, look no further than Wildlife Gardening for Everyone and Everything. Award-winning author and journalist, Kate Bradbury offers tips on feeding your neighbourhood wildlife and explains how you can create the perfect habitats for species you’d like to welcome into your garden.

Kate kindly took some time to answer our wildlife gardening questions, to help us get our gardens wildlife-friendly for summer. Read all about it in our author interview on the Hoopoe.

We have also made a collection of our favourite wildlife gardening books and equipment to turn your garden into a wildlife haven.
NHBS Guide to Dormouse Survey

The Hazel Dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) is a native British species which resides primarily in deciduous woodland. They are protected by EU law because of their rapidly declining numbers and are an important bioindicator species.

To enforce legal protection and ensure the success of conservation projects, current data about the distribution of Hazel Dormice is very important. A variety of survey equipment and methods can be used by licenced dormouse handlers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Read more in our guide to dormouse survey equipment.

Pelagic: NHBS Publisher of the Month
It is our great pleasure to announce Pelagic as our Publisher of the Month for May 2019. Founded in 2010 to fill the publishing gap in practical books available on ecology and conservation, Pelagic publish books for scientists, conservationists, ecologists, wildlife enthusiasts.

The Platypus of Crabs?
New research suggests that the crab family just got a bunch of new cousins. The most intriguing discovery though, according to the scientists is Callichimaera perplexa, a crab which name derives from a chimera, a mythological creature that has body features from more than one animal, similar to the platypus. These findings may force scientists to rethink the definition of a crab.

Selection Favours Many Colours
Researchers from across the world have worked together to identify why Gouldian Finches have distinct multiple head colour types - red, black and yellow. They have identified the behaviour selection and genetic control of plumage differences in this ‘rainbow finch’.

Bird Song
The RSPB have launched their ‘Bird Song’ as part of their #LetNatureSing campaign. Their aim is to protect UK wildlife which is in decline, according to the charity, there are 40 million fewer birds than there were 40 years ago. You can stream and download this compilation of bird songs on most major platforms including iTunes and Spotify.
