The Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds arrives at NHBS
If you follow our social media, you won't have escaped hearing about the recently published Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds. Comprising two volumes and weighing around 6kg, this is a weighty tome in more ways than one. Due to the incredible popularity of the book, the logistics of packing and dispatching all pre-orders was particularly challenging. Read our blog post to see how NHBS staff coped with the task.

NHBS field trip – searching for Nightjars
Last week, a small group NHBS staff travelled to Dartmoor to try and catch a glimpse of Nightjars. As well as getting a chance to see one of the UK’s most elusive birds, this was also a great opportunity to field test some of the equipment that we sell.
They were lucky enough to see 2-3 males displaying and were also able to capture some great audio recordings with the SM4 Acoustic recorder. To hear these and read more about their trip, see the Hoopoe, our NHBS Blog.
Report on CBHL & EBHL Annual Meetings at New York Botanical Gardens
Anneli Meeder, former librarian and now Senior Manager at NHBS recently attended the combined meetings of The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (CBHL) and European Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (EBHL) along with the Linnaeus Link Partners Consortium. It was a well-attended event, with over 100 attendees from the US, Canada and Europe.

One of the highlights of the conference was the announcement of the hotly-contested CBHL Annual Literature Award which went to the outstanding 7-volume work, The Illustrated History of Apples in the United States and Canada by Daniel J. Bussey.

RRS Sir David Attenborough launched
On Saturday 14th July, Sir David Attenborough launched the 10,000-tonne hull of the UK's newest polar ship into the River Mersey. "Our future will be affected by what people working on this ship will be discovering in years to come," he said. An official handover of the finished ship is scheduled for the end of the year.

Cycle racing footage analysed for climate change research
By studying 37 years’ worth of footage from the Tour of Flanders cycle race, researchers from Ghent University have recorded invaluable information regarding the timing of leafing and flowering in trees in response to temperature changes in the area.

Using drones to survey large mammals
A new technique developed by Swiss researchers allows efficient and accurate population assessments of large mammals living in African wildlife reserves. By using footage obtained from drones alongside object recognition software, this new technique makes surveying huge reserves possible.

New Books at NHBS
Canids of the World covers every species of the world's canids, from the Gray Wolf of North America to the dholes of Asia, from African jackals to the South American Bush Dog
This authoritative handbook is the first book dedicated dedicated solely to the world's antpittas (Grallariidae) and gnateaters (Conopophagidae), both of which are native to Central and South America.
Originally published in German, this comprehensive taxonomic work is a practical guide to identifying trees and shrubs in winter using bud and twig characters.
The revised edition of Pines: Drawings and Descriptions of the Genus Pinus provides concise yet essential information on the identification, distribution and ecology of pines, along with new information on the phylogeny and classification of several commonly known species.
Ploughing a New Furrow sets out a blueprint for wildlife friendly farming. Based on the experiences of farmers who have worked to reinstate lost habitats, it considers the opportunity for wildlife to be nurtured by Britain's farmers in a post-Brexit Britain.
Equipment Highlight
The Urban Bird Feeder has a sleek, contemporary design to suit the modern garden and is made from environmentally responsible and recycled materials.
Fauna Corner
Cephalopod Cognition covers the varied and fascinating aspects of cephalopod cognitive abilities; including early learning, memory acquisition and environmental response.
Flora Corner
The Handbook of Asclepiads of Thailand displays the rich and, until recently, rather poorly known pantropical asclepiadaceous flora. This richly illustrated account will appeal to botanists, students, teachers and naturists alike.
