NHBS Grapevine #72: The Best of our Books & Equipment
NHBS Grapevine - The Best of Our Books & Equipment
#72
4th April 2018

About Us
In this edition: On the NHBS blog this week we have a great conversation with Mark Lynas, author of the recently published Seeds of Science, discussing his views on genetically modified organisms. We’re also delighted to announce the arrival of a highly anticipated guide to pug moths, an excellent resource for moth recorders around the UK.

Other highlights: Other new arrivals at NHBS include the final addition to the five-volume Flora of Great Britain and Ireland, a fascinating exploration of seabed habitats and a brand new look at the science of genetic research and its use in tracing human ancestry. Plus, don’t forget to book your great crested newt eDNA kits in time for the spring survey season.

Pug Moths of North-West England: A Guide on Identification and Distribution in Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria
Covering the 43 resident species that occur in North-west England (out of 49 in the UK), this 120-page book summarises the key features to look out for on this difficult but fascinating group of Geometrid moths.
Each species account gives a short morphological description, mentions what is known about larval food plants, and describes distribution and flight period. Photos of the adult moth and, where available, the larva are included, as well a colour distribution map and a chart showing the flight period. An extremely useful guide for recorders both in the North-West and elsewhere in the UK.
Seeds of Science: An interview with Mark Lynas
Mark Lynas is an author, journalist and environmental activist who is known for his books on climate change (including High Tide and Six Degrees) and the Anthropocene (The God Species).
A one-time anti-GMO activist, Mark changed his mind on genetically modified organisms while researching his books on climate change. The newly published Seeds of Science: Why We Got it so Wrong on GMOs, chronicles Mark’s conversion and examines the widespread opposition to GMOs.
We recently chatted with Mark about his book and the story behind it. To read the full interview go to our blog.

Chance plays a significant role in the local survival of species
Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have discovered that, although conservation efforts are often successful in saving threatened species, chance can play a huge role in whether they survive, particularly when two or more species are competing for the same resources.

Huge wildcat recorded in Aberdeenshire Forest
A wildcat estimated to measure 1.2 metres from nose to tale, and which is thought to be one of the largest ever recorded, has been filmed in Aberdeenshire’s Clashindarroch Forest. The footage was collected as part of a Scottish wildcat conservation project.

Seaweeds could have a vital part to play in controlling ocean acidity
By absorbing carbon dioxide throughout the day, kelp and other seaweeds temporarily increase the pH level of water near to their blades. Researchers from the University of Tasmania are now studying how small calcifying organisms use this niche as a way of surviving in an increasingly acidic ocean.
