New Flora of the British Isles - Fourth Edition coming soon
The New Flora of the British Isles has replaced the earlier Flora of the British Isles to become the standard work on the identification of the wild flowering plants, ferns and conifers of the British Isles. The Fourth Edition remains unique in many features, with its user-friendly organisation, line drawings and photographs of critical features, and its specially compiled keys and descriptions. Updates include more than 200 additional species and hybrids, changes at lower, genus levels and innumerable adjustments to the descriptions, keys, distributions and categories.

"Clive Stace has become a household name amongst British field botanists since his first edition..."

New manufactured nets from NHBS
The destruction of aquatic ecosystems is a major issue facing conservationists globally – causes include microplastic pollution, acidification, global warming and over-fishing. The manufacturing team at NHBS have produced a series of new survey nets designed to help researchers gather data on microplastics and to sample plankton more efficiently. Join us as we test the prototypes in Plymouth Sound.

Big Garden Birdwatch 2019

The 2019 Big Garden Birdwatch is being held from 26-28th January. Now in its 40th year, the event is crucial in helping to monitor trends in the distribution and abundance of birds in the UK.
It takes as little as an hour and is a great activity for the whole family. Read more on what's involved and how to participate in our blog.

Chemical composition to track fish origin
A reference map has been developed by analysing the transferable chemical composition of jellyfish from specific locations across the UK. The map can also be used to determine the origin of many other organisms (including fish) and will help conservation and food fraud detection.

Positive evidence for US marine life
A new study has shown that 75% of US marine mammal and sea turtle populations significantly increased after being listed on the US Endangered Species Act. Conservation measures such as tailored species management and fishery regulations are thought to be the cause.

Lichens can have up to three fungi
Researches have used advanced DNA sequencing to examine the genomes of the Wolf Lichen, and they almost always contained three fungi. These findings challenge the long-held view that lichens were made up of a single fungus and alga.
