Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 - 1913) is one of the fathers of modern science. After his early expeditions in Amazonia, Wallace's years of research in the Malay Archipelago, between 1854 and 1862, saw him develop the theory of evolution, conteporaneous with, yet quite independent of Darwin, which secured his place as one of the great Victorian scientists. Through this work he made an enormous contribution to our knowledge of the geography, biology and ethnology of South East Asia; in this and his earlier work in Amazonia, he provides the connection between the works of Bates, Spruce, and Darwin himself.
The quality of reproduction of illustrations and text is excellent. The book is in Adobe Acrobat pdf format (with free Reader software supplied), allowing high-quality printing of the text and plates.
